Story

Synopsis

Shinji Ikari is summoned to Tokyo-3 by the father who abandoned him and immediately told to pilot a giant bio-mechanical machine against a creature that has already destroyed everything sent against it. He is fourteen, unwilling, and given no meaningful choice, and the adults around him treat his compliance as a foregone conclusion. The film covers the opening Angel battles with substantially upgraded animation while establishing Rei Ayanami, Misato Katsuragi, and the specific institutional coldness that defines Shinji's entire situation. Every adult around him treats his compliance as something already decided.

Directed by Hideaki Anno as the first entry in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, this film retells the opening of Neon Genesis Evangelion with modern production values and comparatively few narrative changes, saving its major divergences for later installments.
