Story

Synopsis

A small fish escapes her father's underwater care, gets stuck in a jar, and is rescued by a five-year-old boy named Sosuke, who names her Ponyo. Having tasted human blood and human affection, she decides she would rather be a girl, and her transformation destabilizes the ocean itself, flooding the coastal town and pulling the moon out of position. The film runs almost entirely on the logic of a young child, with adults reacting to a natural catastrophe as though it were merely inconvenient weather.

Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Ponyo was animated entirely by hand with no computer assistance, using an unusually loose, crayon-influenced style and reportedly over a hundred and seventy thousand frames. Miyazaki drew the ocean sequences himself, treating water as a character rather than an effect. The film was a substantial commercial success in Japan and earned strong international reception, and it remains among the studio's most visually experimental works despite being aimed squarely at very young viewers. Its hand-drawn ocean sequences remain among the most technically ambitious in animation.
