Story

Synopsis

In 2075, orbital debris poses a genuine hazard to spaceflight, and somebody has to clean it up. Ai Tanabe joins the Debris Section, an underfunded, disrespected department staffed by people whose careers stalled out, including Hachirota Hoshino, who dreams of owning his own ship. The series begins as workplace comedy and gradually becomes something considerably more serious about labor, corporate exploitation, terrorism, and the political inequality between spacefaring nations and everyone left behind on Earth. Every episode grounds its science in genuine orbital mechanics rather than convenient invention, and the workplace frustrations feel as real as the vacuum outside. Nothing about it is glamorous.

Adapted from Makoto Yukimura's manga by Sunrise, Planetes is celebrated as one of the most scientifically grounded science fiction anime ever produced, with orbital mechanics and the practical realities of working in vacuum treated with unusual rigor. Yukimura, who later created Vinland Saga, brings the same interest in ordinary people caught inside larger systems. The series is frequently recommended as hard science fiction that never loses sight of its characters, and its treatment of space as a workplace rather than an adventure remains distinctive. Its treatment of space work as ordinary labor remains genuinely unusual.
