Story

Synopsis

The conflict between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance intensifies as Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li begin recognizing each other as the only opponent genuinely worth their attention. Fleet engagements play out across enormous distances, decided by supply lines, formation discipline, and the willingness of commanders to accept casualties. Political interference from both governments constrains what either man can accomplish, and the film treats institutional incompetence as a more dangerous adversary than anything the opposing navy can field. Every engagement is decided by discipline and timing rather than fleet size.

Part of Production I.G's Die Neue These retelling of Yoshiki Tanaka's novels, this film continues an ambitious modern adaptation of a work frequently ranked among the greatest anime ever produced. The original 1988 OVA ran for 110 episodes and is celebrated for refusing to resolve its central argument about whether an efficient autocracy or a corrupt democracy better serves its citizens. Die Neue These has been praised for opening that dense material to newer audiences while preserving the philosophical seriousness that made the source material a landmark of the medium.
